An Arvada man is being held in the Jefferson County Jail for allegedly slashing a cat named Precious six times with sword.

Richard Davis, 38, was booked on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, and misdemeanor criminal mischief. He is being held on $2,500 bail.

Arvada police said Davis’ fiancée brought a stray kitten into a house in the 8700 block of West 54th Place on Aug. 17.

Precious, a calico tabby already living in the home, had recently given birth to a litter of kittens. At about 4 a.m. on Aug. 17, Precious scratched and bit Davis’ fiancée.

Police said that while the woman attended to the scratches and bites, Davis grabbed a 2-foot-long sword and chased Precious around the house. He struck the cat several times in the abdomen, police said.

Although severely wounded, Precious survived, police said, and is receiving care at a Planned Pethood facility in Denver.

Davis’ fiancée took the cat to Planned Pethood and signed over ownership to the veterinarian for treatment.
