Defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s soccer champion Fort Lewis opened its season Thursday with a convincing win, 5-1 over host Northeastern (Okla.) State.

Junior John Cunliffe had two goals and an assist, and Cole Sweetster and Jonathan Boyer each had a goal and an assist for the Skyhawks. Northeastern received four penalty cards, and the team finished the game a man short after a player was ejected for rough play in the 75th minute.

It was the second straight loss for Northeastern to Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks ended Northeastern’s season in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year.

Fort Lewis continues its Oklahoma road trip against Oral Roberts on Saturday night.

The top two finishers in the five-team tournament qualify for the 2006 world championships. The Unite States is undefeated at 3-0 in pool play, which ends today. The top four teams advance to the semifinals Saturday.
