Washington – The base closure commission voted today to close the Defense Finance Accounting Services center at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver.
The pay processing operation employs at least 1,250 people.
The Pentagon had initially planned to add 1,500 jobs to the center as finance functions were consolidated from other installations across the country.
But the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission added the Lowry center to the list of facilities being considered for shutdown. After reviewing the center, they decided other facilities were better suited for the job.
Today, the commission said closing the operation would allow the military to downsize administrative functions and still ensure that personnel would get their paychecks on time.
“I think this is one of the best actions done by this particular BRAC team,” said commissioner James T. Hill. “We’ve got a better proposal, it’s a fairer proposal.”
