Two men were shot to death at a home south of Bennett on Thursday afternoon, and Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputies took an armed man into custody at the scene, the Sheriff’s Department reported.
Details of the incident were sketchy, but the department said in a news release that a man inside the residence called the sheriff’s communication center at 4:59 p.m., saying two men had been shot, that he and six other people were still inside and that the shooter was trying to get into the home.
The call taker advised the caller to find a secure location in the home, the release said. The seven people locked themselves in the basement.
When deputies from Arapahoe and Adams counties arrived at 5:15 p.m., they confronted the suspect and ordered him to drop his weapon, which he did.
Other deputies entered the home and found the two dead men, the release said.
Three adults and four children were found safe inside.
The identities of the people involved and the motive for the shooting were under investigation Thursday.
The names of the dead men will be released by the Arapahoe County coroner after relatives have been notified, the release said.
