The Colorado Mammoth was unable to move up in Monday night’s National Lacrosse League draft in order to get former University of Denver star Matt Brown, but it made a DU connection in the fourth round by selecting Scott Davidson of the Pioneers.
Brown was taken by the Arizona Sting in the first round with the fifth overall pick. Brown is the fourth all-time goal scorer in DU history with 113 goals.
Two picks later, the Mammoth chose 5-foot-11, 180-pound forward Dan Carey of Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. Carey scored 30 goals for Canisius this past spring, his junior year.
“We’re happy to have Dan Carey,” Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said from draft headquarters in Edmonton, Alberta. “He’s a very good player. He played well in college and the past two years in Mann Cup.”
Mann Cup is the Canadian national box lacrosse championship, the same style as the NLL but played in the summer.
In the second round, the Mammoth traded Brad Self to Philadelphia in exchange for the Wings’ pick, fifth in the round and 16th overall. With that pick, it chose Ryan Marshall, a 6-foot, 200-pounder from Scarborough, Ontario, who helped Duke reach the NCAA title game last spring.
In the third round, Colorado selected Shawn Williams from Surrey, British Columbia, then Davidson, followed by Andy Glenn from Peterborough, Ontario, in the fifth round and Adam Hughes from Cortland State (N.Y.) in the final round.
