The Colorado Department of Transportation hopes to reopen U.S. 6, west of Golden, next week.

The stretch of highway, between Colorado 119 and Colorado 93, was closed after a massive rock slide on June 21st.

“We’re hoping to open the road sometime next week, and we wouldn’t open it unless it was safe,” said CDOT spokesman Bob Wilson.

Wilson said, after the official reopening, workers still will need to install netting against the rock face above the highway.

A helicopter will be used to hoist the netting into place, an approach which will be much faster than using a crane, said Wilson.

During that operation, the highway will be closed, he said. Other intermittent closures are possible, as well.

Wilson said the highway could reopen as early as Monday.

“We won’t open it up until we’re assured that the road is safe for travel through the canyon,” said Wilson.
