More than 800 people attended the annual Colorado Black Chamber of Commerce dinner and awards ceremony Saturday evening at the Marriott City Center in downtown Denver.

The event, whose theme was “Unfinished Business,” featured remarks by Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and chamber chairman Darrell Nulan.

Event committee chairman Darrick Brown on Monday said one of the things minority- owned businesses can do in Colorado’s economy is look for opportunities in city and state contracts.

“We’re really just getting started and haven’t even scratched the surface,” Brown said.

The ceremony, slightly shorter than last year’s and focusing on networking for young professionals, included Jammin’ 92.5 host Gloria Neal as emcee and entertainment from jazz vocalist Oleta Adams.

The chamber hosted a table of Hurricane Katrina evacuees from Lowry.

Brown said overall attendance at the event was so high that some potential guests had to be turned away.

Also, for the first time, the chamber held an after-hours networking event.

“We couldn’t get people to leave this time. It was amazing,” Brown said.
