Getting your player ready...

Wednesday’s injury report on Broncos starting cornerbacks Champ Bailey and Darrent Williams was more promising than last week at this time. Both sat vs. Jacksonville.

Williams, who has a left ankle injury, was upgraded to probable and is expected to play Sunday against Washington at Invesco Field at Mile High. Bailey is still listed as questionable, and his chances of playing against his former team remain up in the air.

“He was out there (at practice), but we have to see him do more things,” coach Mike Shanahan said of Bailey, who has a left hamstring injury. “We’ll know more Friday.”

Bailey, whose string of consecutive games ended at 99 on Sunday, wasn’t available to the Denver media Wednesday. But he told Washington media during a conference call that he hopes to play.

“I think so. I mean, I am confident that I will, but being realistic, who knows?” Bailey said. “It is more of a thing that I have to wait and see later in the week. … If I can run, I’ll play.”

Lenny Walls and Domonique Foxworth started against the Jaguars, with rookie Karl Paymah also getting playing time. Foxworth likely will play a significant role against the Redskins because of his outstanding play against the Jaguars, which included an interception and a fumble recovery in his first start.

Funny man Portis

Clinton Portis, traded to Washington for Bailey before last season, was his usual comedic self during a conference call with Denver media.

On friend Rod Smith: “I guess he thinks he’s tough now. I just told him to remember that the Chiefs knocked him out, so I don’t think he’d want any of our secondary.”

On whether he’ll bring his famous championship belt back to Invesco Field: “No. I loved it as the champ, but I have to return it for something else. I can’t still be the champ two years later.”

Footnotes

Cornerback Curome Cox returned to the practice squad after he cleared waivers. … The only player who didn’t practice was cornerback Roc Alexander … The Redskins returned 276 tickets, available through Ticketmaster.
