My hands-down favorite thing about hitting the Comedy Works two weeks ago was watching Dave Chappelle absolutely tear through a brutalizing set of stand-up comedy that made my ribs ache.
My second-favorite thing about hitting the Comedy Works (1226 15th St., 303-595- 3637) was tearing through two rounds of brutalizing Red Bull-vodkas.
The mixology of cocktails is something central to this column and its weekly opining on bars. Yes, we like ’em strong. But we also like ’em good. Well-crafted drinks mean return customers. Smart bartenders know this.
But at the Comedy Works, my friend Scott and I were in it to win it. After cutting a line that stretched around the corner and into Larimer Square, we ran into friends Tram, Ian and Cole at the upstairs bar. It was only a few minutes before we were ushered downstairs into another line, which wound around to another bar, and by the time we sat down for the show we were two drinks in. (Buying what they’re selling, I know, but bar-placement works.)
Only they weren’t normal drinks. The Comedy Works, as it turns out, is in it to win too. Oftentimes when you’re at an event bar – Red Rocks or Invesco Field – it’s $7 for a poorly poured cocktail. But that’s not the case at Comedy Works.
“Lubing up for laughter” is the idea for a comedy club bar. But still, these were surprisingly proper drinks – of course, the show wasn’t so bad either.

Funky: No matter where you go, there’s a bar.
Skunky: Stuck in a long line outside on a cold night before the show? Too bad. Unless you cut like we did.
