Guatemala City – A total of 588 women have been killed in Guatemala so far in 2005, 10 percent more than in 2004.

Friday night, a woman and her three children were shot to death south of this capital, a Volunteer Fire Department spokesman said Saturday.

The woman, who was not identified, was driving a car carrying her four children, only one of which, age 7, survived the attack by unknown gunmen.

In addition, on Friday, the Municipal Fire Department said a woman’s body had been discovered in a ravine some 150 meters (500 feet) deep in the suburb of Santa Fe, south of the capital.

The unidentified victim was knifed to death and her body placed in a metal drum that was rolled down the ravine, the department said.

On Thursday, police discovered the body of Elsa Reyes, 25, in a river near a private farm by the name of Manantial, in the southern municipality of Mazatenango.

According to the National Civil Police, the woman was shot to death on Nov. 23, but her body had not been found.
