Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers vowed Saturday to search for money to help pay victims of serial rapist Brent J. Brents, even if it comes from private donations and fundraising.
“I feel very strongly about this, and I’m not going to give up until we’ve exhausted all possibilities,” Chambers said.
Chambers said that because of governmental immunity from liability, the county does not legally owe money to Brents’ rape and assault victims.
“This is more a matter of doing the right thing and stepping up and taking some responsibility,” she said.
She said it is still possible that Arapahoe County can tap victim compensation funds to defray the medical and counseling costs of the victims.
County officials including Chambers will also contact private individuals about seeking private contributions and holding events to raise some of the money.
She said mistakes by her office contributed to delays in seeking an arrest warrant for the repeat sex offender after he acknowledged to Aurora police that he molested a boy in late 2004.
