Texas quarterback Vince Young can claim at least one victory over Southern California this season.
And Colorado’s Mason Crosby can find solace after missing out on the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker.
The juniors were selected to The Associated Press All-America team released Tuesday, relegating USC’s Matt Leinart and Oregon State’s Alexis Serna to second-team status.
Young was runner-up in the Heisman Trophy voting to Trojans tailback Reggie Bush and was one of four Longhorns on the first team. Bush was one of three All-Americans from top- ranked USC and a unanimous first-team selection.
The Trojans’ other 1,000-yard running back, Chatfield High School graduate LenDale White, was named to the third team.
Running back Brian Calhoun, who transferred to Wisconsin after gaining a team-leading 810 yards during his sophomore season at Colorado, was a second-team selection.
Arizona State: Coach Dirk Koetter will have his contract extended after leading the Sun Devils to a bowl for the second consecutive season.
Athletic director Lisa Love said terms of the extension, including the length, were being discussed, but Koetter, who is 34-28 in five seasons with the Sun Devils, said he is authorized to tell recruits he will be the coach through their time at the school. Koetter’s current contract is set to expire after the 2007 season.
The Sun Devils play Rutgers in the Insight Bowl on Dec. 27.
Florida: Freshman quarterback Josh Portis has decided to transfer and will not be with the team for its Outback Bowl game Jan. 2 against Iowa, leaving the Gators with little experience behind starter Chris Leak.
Cornelius Ingram and Gavin Dickey shared repetitions as the backup during practice, but neither has thrown a pass this season.
