Englewood – This time, maybe for the first time, Dan Reeves couldn’t coach Gary Kubiak.

Reeves was in town Friday, asking questions as a special consultant to the Houston Texans. Only this time Reeves grilled Kubiak not on the weekly game plan, but in the discovery process of whether his former quarterback had developed enough wisdom over the years to become a head coach.

The Broncos’ offensive coordinator interviewed Friday for the Texans’ vacancy at the Inverness Hotel and Conference Center. Reeves was there as part of the Texans’ interviewing contingent that included team owner Bob McNair.

Indications are Kubiak fared well in the interview.

“Dan being in the room, an old coach and a very good friend, it’s really been a great experience for me,” Kubiak said in a conference call with Houston-based reporters.

Part of the interview process was to have Kubiak answer questions from the Houston media. As for the Denver reporters who gathered at the hotel, Kubiak declined comment.

In his hometown of Houston, Kubiak knows full attention is on the coaching search. Here in what Kubiak called his adoptive hometown of Denver, he does not want his job candidacy to become a distraction during the Broncos’ playoff run.

The Broncos’ success, coupled with the marked improvement of quarterback Jake Plummer, are the primary reasons Kubiak has again emerged as a top head coaching candidate. Kubiak is scheduled to interview with the Detroit Lions today.

Even if Reeves may not know for sure whether Kubiak can make the jump from successful offensive coordinator to successful head coach, he is familiar with just about everything else about the man. Kubiak had a nine-year playing career with the Broncos, nearly all of it as John Elway’s backup.

Elway believes Kubiak will make it as head coach.

“I’ve always thought that,” Elway said Thursday. “I’m sure he’ll win some Super Bowls as a head coach down the road.
