Fort Collins – Two tractor-trailers carrying mail and chocolate collided on Interstate 25 early Friday, killing one driver and spilling mail and diesel fuel, the Colorado State Patrol said.
The patrol did not immediately release the victim’s name but said he was a 62-year-old man from Alberta, Canada. His truck, loaded with chocolate bits, was owned by Lonestar CC, the patrol said.
U.S. Motor Carrier Safety Administration records show the company is based in Edmonton, Alberta.
Both trucks were northbound about 50 miles north of Denver when the mail truck went out of control and rolled onto its right side shortly after 2 a.m., the patrol said. The second truck collided with the trailer, splitting it open.
The driver of the mail truck, 31-year-old Robert Griffis of Thornton, was hospitalized in Fort Collins with minor injuries, the patrol said.
Investigators had not determined why Griffis’ truck rolled. The truck was owned by Legacy Trucking of Commerce City.
