Martin Luther King Jr. Day events

Today

Arvada:

MLK candlelight walk and celebration will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the walk. The celebratory event will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Meet at Arvada United Methodist Church, 6750 Carr St. Speakers include community activist Ethan Hemming, Denver Broncos cornerback Domonique Foxworth and Curtis May, director of the Office of Reconciliation Ministries. There will also be talks, gospel music and a dance performance.

Boulder:

The 2006 MLK Day celebration will begin with a rally and march at 11 a.m. on the Pearl Street Mall in front of the County Courthouse. Events that include cake, entertainment, “teach-ins” and more continue at Boulder High School at 12:30 p.m. For a list of events and locations, go to www.ci.boulder.co.us and click on “Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration.”

Denver:

The 21st annual Dinner For Those Who Hunger, in commemoration of the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at Jackson’s Sports Restaurant, 1520 20th St. More than 1,500 meals of ribs, green beans, cheesy potatoes, dessert and more will be served. Live jazz/blues and gospel music will be featured. Kaiser Permanente will offer free health screenings. The Volunteers of America is hosting the event, radio station KUVO 89.3 FM is a sponsor, and Wells Fargo Bank is paying for the food. ARC Thrift Stores will hand out free coats and warm clothing.

Marade (march and parade) participants will gather at 9 a.m. in City Park at the statue of Martin Luther King Jr. A ceremony and laying of the wreath will be at 10 a.m. The march starts at 10:45 a.m. and will arrive at Civic Center at approximately 11:45 a.m., with a program that includes grand marshal and keynote speaker Vernon King, nephew of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. The following RTD bus routes will be detoured for the marade: 0, 2, 6, 7, 9, 10, 15, 15-Ltd, 16-Ltd., 20, 24, 50, 52 and 83-Ltd.

Kaiser Permanente is offering a free Mini Health Fair, with breast exams, hearing tests, ear and eye exams, and diabetes screening from noon to 5 p.m. at The Samaritan House, 2301 Lawrence St.

MLK Jr. African American Heritage Rodeo Champions will be at the National Western Stock Show Events Center, 4655 Humboldt St., at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12, $15 and $35.

Red Rocks Community College is having its sixth annual community MLK celebration with a free breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the Community Room on the west end of the college’s Lakewood campus, 13300 W. Sixth Ave. Entertainer Opalanga Pugh will be the featured keynote speaker. For information, call 303-914-6298.

The MLK Jr. essay and fine arts award reception will be at 3:30 p.m. in the MLK Jr. Library/Municipal Service Center, 9898 E. Colfax Ave., Aurora.
