Two recent bad decisions, one serious and one less so, have been overturned, and it’s worth noting that good sense won out.

A Turkish appeals court held that Mehmet Ali Agca, the gunman who tried to assassinate Pope John-Paul II in 1981 and murdered journalist Abdi Ipekci in 1979, hadn’t served enough prison time before being released Jan. 12.

Agca surrendered to police in Istanbul and could be behind bars until at least 2014.

Washington came to its senses and issued a license Friday to allow Cuba to play in the World Baseball Classic with 16 other teams March 3-20.

In a knuckleheaded move, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Asset Control had denied Cuba’s application to play in the tourney.

Baseball is too serious a matter to be tainted by mere politics.
