A female clerk in a south Aurora Goodwill store was shot in the head during a robbery Thursday night, police spokesman Marcus Dudley said.
The unidentified woman was airlifted to the Medical Center of Aurora South in what appeared to be critical condition, Dudley said.
The bandit, dressed all in black and wearing a mask over his head, confronted the clerk as she entered an office at the rear of the business carrying money from the cash registers at the front of the store, he said. It wasn’t known Thursday night why the shooting occurred.
The victim called police about 7:30 p.m. from the store, at East Belleview Avenue and South Parker Road, indicating she had been shot, Dudley said.
Witnesses told arriving officers that the suspect might still be in the area and described his car as a red or copper-color Pontiac. When officers checked the location where the car was last seen, all they found was a discarded mask, Dudley said.
At first the woman appeared to have been punched in the mouth, but it was determined she had been shot with a small-caliber weapon, he said.
The robber escaped with an unknown amount of money.
“Our officers are vigorously pursuing all leads,” Dudley said. “This is especially concerning because the female employee happens to be a relative of one of our officers.”
