Denver police are cautioning the public to be aware of police impersonators after a woman was stopped by two men who falsely claimed to be officers.
The incident happened at 7:45 a.m. Monday in the 6600 block of East Colfax Avenue, police said.
The woman, whom police are not identifying, was on her way to work when the driver of a white Dodge Intrepid pulled up next to her, flashed a badge and motioned for her to pull over, as did a passenger in his car.
Both men had what appeared to be gold badges on white polo shirts and dark pants, the woman told police. The two got out of their car and approached her after she stopped in the parking lot of Funeraria Latina.
One of the men approached the driver’s side door and asked for her license, registration and proof of insurance, the woman said, while the other leaned his back on the passenger door and smoked a cigarette. Both identified themselves as Denver police officers.
When the woman said she was suspicious, both men got back in the Intrepid and left, taking her license and other documents.
The woman described the driver as a clean- cut white man in his 40s, about 160 pounds, with feathered blond hair and a bushy moustache who had a raspy voice.
The passenger was described as a white man, approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall, in his 40s, bald with a missing front top tooth on the left side.
