Two suspects in a Tuesday night murder snarled rush hour traffic this morning as they led police on a high speed chase through Aurora and Denver, officials say.
The two men were arrested after their car engine began smoking and they pulled over on eastbound Interstate 76 in North Denver, said Rudy Herrera, Aurora police spokesman.
The suspects, whose names have not been released, surrendered at about 6:30 a.m., Herrera said. They were being questioned about the murder at police headquarters.
Police answered a 11:30 p.m. call of shots fired near 19th Avenue and Macon Street, he said. Police found a man with gunshot wounds in an alley east of the 1700 block of Macon Street.
The victim was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Herrera said.
Witnesses told police the suspect or suspects were at a nearby home, he said.
Detectives watched the home until two men came out of the house early this morning and got into a white Corsica, Herrera said. The car matched a description of the murder suspect’s vehicle, Herrera said.
A marked patrol car pulled the suspect car over near Interstate 70 and Havana Street. The suspect car pulled over briefly but then sped off.
The suspects, with the 9News traffic helicopter following overhead, led police on a chase through Denver on I-76.
Police are investigating the motive in the shooting, he said.
“We have every reason to believe the suspects are in custody,” Herrera said.
