Denver Police are investigating a drive-by shooting in which two girls were injured.

Six-year-old Jayzmine Padilla was on the back porch of her home on the 2500 block of E. 37th Avenue when a car drove through the parking lot of the apartment complex, and a man began firing shots, according to Chief Gerry Whitman. The girl was hit in the knee. Her 14-year-old sister, Karina, ran outside and was shot in the abdomen.

Both girls are expected to survive.

Whitman says the girls were not the intended targets and the shooting maybe gang-related. He said five to six shots were fired.

Police are looking for several men in a light gray, 4-door Dodge Intrepid in connection with the shooting.

“This is a priority for us right now,” Whitman said.

Whitman said many children are playing outside this week in Denver because of spring break.
