Qwest eyes upgrade of high-speed Internet

Qwest wants to beef up its high-speed Internet capability by buying government radio frequencies expected to be auctioned in June, chief executive Richard Notebaert said Friday.

In addition, the Denver-based phone company could someday offer TV service through the radio frequencies in a wireless technology known as Wi-Max. Qwest currently has two “quasi-commercial” trials of Wi-Max on the Front Range, Notebaert said in a Daniels College of Business presentation.

Qwest currently resells DirecTV service, packaged with telephone and high-speed Internet service, to help it compete against cable companies Comcast and Bresnan Communications in Colorado.

It is trying to get approval from 32 metro-area governments on a model franchise agreement to offer TV service.

Sponsorship deal at Red Rocks possible

Southwest Airlines is in discussions with Denver and Proxy Partnerships, sponsorship agency for the Denver division of theaters and arenas including Red Rocks Amphitheatre, about a Red Rocks sponsorship.

Southwest’s name may have a subdued presence there compared with other venue sponsorships. “Red Rocks is a very special place, and it’s not the kind of place that would be commercialized, nor would we try to take it to that level,” said Southwest promotions and events manager Derek Kuester.
