Louis Heckert, the 92-year-old “father of Grand Lake” who was attacked by a moose as he walked to church late last month, died Wednesday as a result of the attack, his family announced this morning.

On the morning of March 26, the elderly man, who suffered from macular degeneration, apparently walked straight into the injured and aggressive 800-pound bull moose as it strolled down Grand Lake’s main street. Heckert was rushed to Denver by ambulance and diagnosed with a severe brain injury.

In a statement released by St. Anthony Hospitals, Heckert’s family expressed appreciation for the “kindness, prayers and support” received since the attack and thanked St. Anthony Central Hospital and Lutheran Hospice “for the excellent and compassionate care extended to their father.”

Heckert had been moved to Lutheran Hospice Care from St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver.
