Q&A
Andrew Dore, a 5-year-old St. Thomas More preschooler, recently was recognized by South Metro Fire Rescue for calmness under pressure for dialing 911 in February when his mother fell while climbing stairs in their home.
His mother, Kelly Dore, 27, was carrying his infant brother. She fell on her back, protecting the infant, but was unable to move for a time.
Andrew called fire dispatch, gave his address and phone number and stayed on the phone until firefighters and paramedics arrived.
His father, Tim, is a volunteer with Franktown Fire Protection District, and Andrew was thrilled when a dispatcher informed him that fire engines were on the way.
He was given the “Young Hero Award” by the fire district in front of his classmates and was held as an example of why it’s important to teach kids how and when to call 911.
Q: Were you afraid when you saw your mom on the floor, and how did you know to call 911?
A: My mom told me who to call. I was scared that her back went out.
Q: What did you learn from this experience?
A: I want to be a firefighter even more now because I love fire engines. They’re red, my favorite color, and they’re also white, which is my other favorite color. I like yellow and green too, though.
Q: How did your classmates treat you after they watched you receive this award from the fire department?
A: My friend Emily said she can’t believe she saw me on TV. It’s nice to get the attention from someone who doesn’t bite, because my little sister bites sometimes.
