A 32-year-old babysitter has been arrested in connection with fatal injuries to a 5-month-old boy in her care, said Adams County sheriff’s Sgt. Louis Dixon in a prepared statement.
Laura Cervantes was arrested Monday for child abuse resulting in death, Dixon said. The boy, whose name wasn’t released, died Monday at Children’s Hospital.
The infant’s mother had dropped the baby off at Cervantes home, in unincorporated Adams County just north of Denver, about 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Dixon said. Later that morning she found the child unresponsive and took him to a clinic near her home.
She was told to take the baby to an emergency room immediately, and she took him to St. Anthony North Hospital, claiming the baby was sick.
An emergency room doctor there felt the baby might have a severe head injury, and due to his condition the child was flown by helicopter to Children’s, Dixon said.
“The baby was receiving medical treatment until yesterday (Monday) morning when he lost the battle and was pronounced dead,” Dixon said in the statement.
After being interview by investigators Monday Cervantes was arrested, he said.
