Aurora – Despite a healthy mountain snowpack and well- fed reservoirs, Aurora officials anticipate a hot, dry summer and are asking for watering restrictions.

The City Council tonight is expected to approve a resolution that would impose three- day-a-week lawn-watering limitations during designated hours through the summer.

The restrictions would be the same as last year, with addresses ending in even numbers able to water on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and odd addresses able to water Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The move comes a week after the Denver Water Board imposed rules calling for residents to water only three times a week on nonspecified days.

Aurora’s restrictions are necessary, according to water officials, because of the hot weather and the anticipated demand for lawn watering.

That demand is predicted because the lack of snow in the city over the winter has made for thirsty lawns that will require more watering than normal, according to a city analysis.

“Reservoir storage content, while continuing to recover, is still at a level that warrants caution,” according to documents provided to the City Council.

“The snowpack is not as rosy as people have been making it out to be,” said Meaghan Hughes, Aurora Water spokeswoman. “With the hot, dry weather, it’s been dropping.”

The restrictions, if approved, will be in place from May 1 to Oct. 31.
