DENVER

Warning light sends plane back to DIA

An American Airlines plane returned to Denver International Airport safely Wednesday night after it was forced to make an emergency landing because its nose gear warning light turned on while airborne, an airport official said.

Flight 2261 left the airport after 9:30 p.m. and was en route to Los Angeles, DIA spokesman Steve Snyder said. The light turned on shortly after takeoff, and the pilot decided to return to DIA.

The plane landed safely before 10:30 p.m., Snyder said. It was met with emergency vehicles, but there were no injuries.

Synder said the aircraft would be inspected to see if there were any problems with the nose gear or the warning light.

A message left for an American Airlines spokesman by The Associated Press was not immediately returned.

AURORA

Pair questioned in

shooting from vehicle

Aurora police were questioning two people Wednesday night in connection with a shooting that left a man in critical condition, police spokesman Marcus Dudley said.

Officers were called to a parking lot near Salida Street and Tower Road about 5 p.m. and found a passenger in a silver- color Dodge Durango who had been shot in the back, Dudley said. The victim was airlifted to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood. His name wasn’t released.

Two men in the Durango were driving in the 18600 block of East Montview Boulevard when they were fired on several times by the occupants of a black GMC Yukon, Dudley said.

It isn’t known why the shots were fired, he said. The suspects, a man and a woman, were seen later in a red Lincoln Navigator before being located about 9:35 p.m., Dudley said.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY

Suspect in sex assaults arrested in Florida

A 50-year-old man wanted on multiple charges relating to sexual assaults on children by a person in a position of trust was arrested Tuesday by U.S. marshals at his Cape Coral, Fla., home.

Capt. Brice Moomaw of the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said Al Sartain was arrested on a warrant issued in Arapahoe County last month. The warrant is sealed, he said.

Sartain is being held in Fort Myers, Fla., in lieu of $250,000 bail pending resolution of his extradition. If he waives extradition, he could be returned to Colorado quickly, Moomaw said.

FEDERAL HEIGHTS

Both drivers die

in head-on wreck

Federal Heights police are investigating a head-on wreck that killed two men.

Officers responded to a wreck at West 84th Avenue just west of Pecos Street about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday and discovered that a white Mitsubishi and a blue Honda station wagon had collided.

The 30-year-old driver of the Honda had to be extricated from his car and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mitsubishi, 51, was transported to a local hospital, where he died, police said.

No names were released.

The preliminary investigation determined that the Honda was eastbound in the westbound lanes of West 84th at a high rate of speed. The Mitsubishi was westbound.

It hasn’t been determined if alcohol or drugs were involved, police said.

DENVER

No sex relationship, ex-CU prof testifies

A former University of Colorado professor has testified that he never had a sexual relationship with a research assistant who sued the university alleging the professor forced her to have sex with him.

R. Igor Gamow, who taught chemical engineering, testified in U.S. District Court on Tuesday in a lawsuit filed by the research assistant, Dana Ruehlman. The suit, which seeks unspecified damages, accuses the school of harboring a hostile work environment and taking no action against Gamow despite other allegations of sexual harassment against him.

The university suspended Gamow after Ruehlman’s lawsuit was filed in 2002 and fired him in 2004 for “moral turpitude.” Gamow has sued the university, alleging his firing was illegal. That case is pending.

No criminal charges have been filed in any of the allegations against Gamow.

Gamow testified that Ruehlman, a veterinarian who is now an instructor in integrative physiology at CU, was treating him for impotence. He said it was Ruehlman’s idea to view pornography and use “manual stimulation,” and he denied that the activities were sexual or that he forced her to participate.

Gamow told jurors that Ruehlman acted as his doctor for many ailments, including a bad back.

GRANADA

Internment camp may become historic site

Camp Amache, a World War II-era Japanese-American internment camp in southeastern Colorado, would become a national historic site under legislation introduced Wednesday in Congress.

The 593-acre site near Granada housed more than 10,000 Japanese-Americans and foreign nationals as the United States battled with Japan in World War II.

The legislation was introduced by Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Fort Morgan, in the House and by Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., in the Senate, with Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo.

The land would continue to be owned by the town of Granada and managed by a group called Friends of Amache.

The National Park Service would provide technical consulting to the historic site.
