A man suspected of stealing construction equipment was flown to a hospital Wednesday after crashing his truck with police in pursuit.

At least one officer fired his gun at the suspect, but it’s unknown whether the fire hit the truck or the driver.

The suspect’s name has not been released by police and his medical condition is unknown.

The incident started at about 1 a.m. near the intersection of 112th Avenue and Chambers Road, said Commerce City Police Lt. Chuck Saunier.

The area is under massive development and there have been a high number of thefts from construction sites recently, Saunier said.

A Commerce City officer saw a Chevrolet pickup truck towing a Bobcat, a small front-end loader, out of a construction site and the officer attempted to stop the driver because of the odd-hour haul.

The driver didn’t stop and instead ran a red light, Saunier said.

The truck wound up on I-76 heading east with police in pursuit. Police also got out in front of the truck and laid stop sticks on the highway. The driver crossed over the highway and was driving east in the westbound lanes when he crashed near a Barr Lake campground.

No one other than the driver was hurt.

The Adams County Critical Incident team is looking into the officer’s gun fire and details will be released at a later time, Saunier said.
