NHRA’s Troxel selected for national award
Denver native Melanie Troxel was honored by the Driver of the Year Foundation, the first woman selected for the foundation’s top quarterly award in its 40-year history.
Troxel, driving in her first NHRA season, has qualified for the final round in each of the five races this season, winning two titles. Troxel received six first-place votes from a panel of 17 journalists and broadcasters. Helio Castroneves, who has two IRL victories, finished second, and Jimmie Johnson of the NASCAR Nextel Cup series was third.
Ex-CBA commissioner Broomfield-bound
The management group that owns two new minor- league sports franchises in Broomfield hired former Continental Basketball Association commissioner Gary Hunter as its president and chief executive officer.
Hunter will head operations for the Colorado 14ers, a new entry in the NBA Development League and an affiliate of the Nuggets; and the Rocky Mountain Rage, an expansion club in the Central Hockey League. Hunter also will oversee the new Broomfield Event Center, home to each team. He was the CBA commissioner for six years.
Regis High diver wins another national title
Sean Moore, a junior at Regis High School, won the national 1-meter springboard title in the ages 16-18 division at the West Junior National Diving Championships in Minneapolis. Drew Brown of Grandview High School finished seventh. It was the third national diving title of Moore’s career. Moore finished third in the 3-meter springboard event, with Brown earning sixth place.
