Tallahassee, Fla. – U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris filed papers Monday to run for the Senate as Florida Gov. Jeb Bush again questioned her ability to win and suggested that House Speaker Allan Bense would make a more potent candidate.
“I just don’t believe she can win,” Bush said. “There’s no complicated reason. She’s not gained any traction.”
Meanwhile Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson also filed his papers for re-election, issuing a statement that appeared to take a swipe at Harris’ ties to Mitchell Wade, a former defense contractor who pleaded guilty this year to bribing former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, R-Calif.
Wade in 2004 gave Harris $32,000 in illegal campaign contributions and last year took her to dinner at one of Washington’s most expensive restaurants. Harris later submitted a $10million appropriations request that would have helped Wade’s company.
Harris last week began running a series of TV ads in which she says: “I never give up. I never give in. I will not quit.”
