Lakewood – A freshman might be lucky to play, let alone score a goal in a playoff game.

Two goals? That would be a dream.

Three goals? That would make you Marissa Davis.

The Golden midfielder scored three unassisted goals in a 10-minute span Wednesday to lead the 11th-seeded Demons to a 4-0 victory over No. 22 Montrose in the first round of the Class 4A girls state soccer tournament at Trailblazer Stadium.

Davis began her spree in the seventh minute with a streaking run down the left side and made it a hat trick in the 17th after a fortunate bounce went her way.

“It was more adrenaline than anything,” Davis said. “We got a really good prep talk before the game, and were told that for pretty much the next two hours, nothing matters.”

Senior Kathryn Maloney drove home a loose ball in the 65th minute to seal a Demons victory that was a result of good finishing.

“We were able to counter really well,” Maloney said. “We were pretty happy with how we did at that.”

The Demons (13-3) won their fourth straight game and notched their seventh shutout of the season behind senior goalie Michelle Asmussen. Golden will face No. 6 Pueblo South (16-0-1), which downed Cherokee Trail 5-0.

The Indians (8-7-1) lost their third straight game and were shut out for the fourth time this season. Montrose, which started just three seniors, has been knocked out of the playoffs by a Jefferson County League team four of the past five seasons.

The Indians were stunned early and unlucky on several scoring chances. Jenny Brown hit the post with a shot in the 33rd minute, Molli Gurule just missed the goal early and Rachael Hansen fanned on a ball inside the 6-yard box in the 61st minute.

“We made 15 minutes worth of mistakes,” Indians coach Mike Frazer said. “Other than that first 15, it’s a 1-0 ballgame.”

Annie Leak hit the crossbar in the fifth minute before Davis opened the scoring two minutes later, finishing off a 30-yard run.

Davis scored her second goal, when she punched home a loose ball off Allison Jones’ cross from the right side.

Two minutes later, Hannah LaFalce sprung Davis with a through ball up the middle. Davis outraced goalie Elizabeth Beshoar to the ball, tapped it off her body and had it deflect back to her in time to put it in the vacant net.
