CH2M Hill, a global engineering design firm based in Arapahoe County, will manage the development process of the proposed North Carolina International Port on the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County. The Triangle Business Journal in North Carolina said the state could pay CH2M Hill as much as $150 million for the work.

The North Carolina State Ports Authority recommended CH2M Hill after a selection process lasting several months. The State Building Commission approved the selection.

The proposed port entails a 600-acre site on the west bank of the Cape Fear River, about 9 1/2 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Conceptual plans envision a major international port terminal, which would catapult North Carolina into the ranks of major U.S. ports.

The facility would have a minimum annual capacity of 1.5 million 20-foot equivalent container units, 4,000 linear feet of berthing space and an industrial park for distribution centers or related operations.
