This week’s garden chores include:

Lightly fertilize raspberries with a lawn fertilizer (not one with a “weed killer” included) or with manure tea. Fertilize fruit trees planted in 2004 or before in the same way, and be sure to follow granular fertilizer applications with watering to dissolve.

Check newest growth portions of trees, shrubs, perennials and vegetables for aphids. A spray of 1-2 parts liquid dish soap (not dishwasher detergent) and 98-99 parts water can be applied directly to aphids.

Consider planting ornamental grasses in your landscape this year. A variety are available from local garden centers. See CSU Cooperative Extension fact sheet 7.232, Ornamental Grasses, at ext.colostate.edu.
