A fire broke out in a three-story brick apartment building in Aurora around noon today, forcing about 60 people to be evacuated temporarily.

Some 40 Aurora firefighters responded to two alarms and took less than 20 minutes to control the fire, which broke out on the second floor of the Galena Apartments at 1600 Galena Street.

Many residents were evacuated by ladders from the third floor. Only one person was reported injured, suffering a cut on his arm.

Aurora Fire Department spokesman Capt. Mike Ackman said the cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

The burned unit received extensive damage. The rest of the building received smoke and water damage. It was not known if some tenants would be allowed to return before nightfall.

The Red Cross responded with aid and food, as well as overnight shelter for those needing it.
