Summer’s concert season is all about momentum, and when you’re rolling steadily you might as well enjoy the energy. Classic-rock titans Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young will join Death Cab for Cutie, Cirque du Soleil’s “Delirium” and others in adding shows because of sold-out performances.
The veteran supergroup will play a July 20 set at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in addition to their July 17-18 performances. If that show sells out, which is not only possible but likely, a potential 28,500 people (three times Red Rocks’ 9,500-person capacity) could be seeing the band in Colorado this summer, an impressive number by any standard.
Death Cab for Cutie, the smartly melodic indie rockers enjoying the push of Fox’s “The OC” and a solid new album, will play an Aug. 7 date at the Fillmore Auditorium in addition to a previously announced Aug. 6 show. Apparently they’ve got a bit of time to kill before their Orem, Utah, appearance Aug. 8.
Cirque du Soleil’s “Delirium,” a multimedia extravaganza focusing more on music than dancing, is likely seeing the most dollar signs as it adds two shows at the Pepsi Center from Sept. 1-2. Depending on the floor setup the arena can hold between 14,000-18,000 people. Four shows in a row there – including the Aug. 30-31 performances – marks a bonafide cultural event.
Tickets for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young ($54.50-$204.50) go on sale today at 10 a.m. Death Cab for Cutie tickets ($26) go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday, and Cirque du Soleil’s “Delirium” ($73.50-$129) are on sale at 10 a.m. Monday. (Ticketmaster)
Reggae on the Rocks seems like the perfect summer combination of feel-good music and a gorgeous outdoor venue. The all-star lineup includes Ziggy Marley, Stephen Marley, Bunny Wailer, Ozomatli, Jon Nicholson and others. And you can feel good rocking out because a dollar from each ticket sold will go to Ziggy Marley’s U.R.G.E. charity, which helps educate children around the world. Tickets for the Aug. 19 show go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. ($42, Ticketmaster)
David Gray, Aimee Mann and Beth Orton will help Boulder-based etown ring in its 15th year. The Aug. 3 concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, one in a series celebrating the nationally-syndicated radio show’s anniversary, will forgo its traditionally interview- heavy structure in favor of full sets from each performer. Interviews will be taped backstage before the concert, said etown’s Roger Menell.
“We don’t usually bust the format, but at Red Rocks we do,” he said. “It just doesn’t work there with all the fans.” Etown also plans shows at Mackey Auditorium in Boulder, the Paramount Theatre and CityLights Pavilion, but this will be its biggest taping of the year. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. ($49.50-$44.50, Ticketmaster)
Manu Chao is one Latin superstar who has never visited Colorado, but fans of the punk-influenced, cross-cultural musician will be tickled to hear he’s stopping by the Fillmore Auditorium. He’ll play with his band Radio Bemba Sound System at the Aug. 3 concert. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. ($25.50, Ticketmaster)
