Denver launches its 31st annual PrideFest this weekend, a festival that celebrates gay pride and the movement for gay civil rights.
Last year, the festival expanded to a two-day format, with PrideFest Family Field Day scheduled for Saturday. This year, the day includes a series of contests – hula hoop, wig relay, balloon toss and others – for children and adults. Radio Disney broadcasts from 2 to 4 p.m., and a Concert in the Park follows at 7 p.m. with comedian Nancy Norton.
Sunday starts with the parade, followed by a series of speakers, including PrideFest Grand Marshal John Hickenlooper and Senate president Joan Fitzgerald. At 1 p.m. Sunday, the main stage will host entertainment until 5 p.m., with singer CeCe Peniston giving a concert at 3 p.m.
Last year, the festival attracted 180,000 people, and the GLBT Center hopes to draw even more this year.
