The scooters are coming! For eight years, Denver welcomed Mile High Mayhem, a convention of more than 300 scooter enthusiasts. This year Denver welcomes Amerivespa 2006, July 27-30. It’s a national scooter meet that will more than double the size of the convention. We’re going to see scooters everywhere.
“The Mayhem people were pleased to have other people plan the weekend,” says Colin Shattuck, a scooterman at Sportique Scooters and author of the best book on the subject, “Scooters: Red Eyes, Whitewalls & Blue Smoke.”
He notes that two hotels are completely filled with visiting scoots. The weekend includes a swap meet, BBQ, bar night, scooter show, slow race, city ride, a mass ride to Red Rocks, a banquet at Wings Over the Rockies and karaoke night.
Start your engines. And check it out at amerivespa.org.
But is it art?
One of the more interesting booths at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival this weekend was Steve Shepard’s – featuring a large painting that read “JESUS DIED SO BUSH COULD KILL AND TORTURE IRAQI CITIZENS.”
I haven’t seen something that edgy at the fest before.
“We’re not in the business of censoring works,” says fest boss Terry Adams. “There are a variety of works here people have opinions on.”
I don’t think I’d want that in my living room. And it doesn’t match my couch anyway.
How much is that guy?
The Fish Foundation’s Hot Summer Nights Bachelor Auction is set for July 19 at Sing Sing. Fifteen of Denver’s most eligible will be on the block, KOSI’s Jo Myers will be the emcee.
What they might need really soon is some more bachelors. Ch. 9’s Chris Vanderveen and Ch. 7’s Russell Haythorn were the only names available last Friday – but organizers promise Crush and Outlaw players.
One of the sponsors, by the way, is Divorce in Denver magazine. So if it works out, you have something to read when it stops working out.

That’s just super
You can’t get near “Superman Returns” at Denver
theaters. Here’s the deal: Clark Kent returns to Metropolis after five years and immediately gets his job back at the Daily Planet. The Memphis Commercial Appeal notes, “Apparently, the Daily Planet is one newspaper without a hiring freeze.”
It’s also anti-American. In one scene, editor Perry White tells the reporters to cover every aspect of Superman’s return. And he asks if Superman still believes in “Truth, justice … and all that stuff.” Huh? What happened to “the American way?” Screenwriters Mike Dougherty and Dan Harris tell reporters that they think “the American way” is too jingoistic and doesn’t mean what it did in 1942. I love Hollywood. Happy July 4.
