As Frontier Airlines expands its international flights to Mexico and Canada, the carrier has also considered flying to Costa Rica.
Known for ecotourism, Costa Rica has “a lot of tourist appeal,” said Frontier spokesman Joe Hodas. “People really like to go down there and check it out.”
No airline flies nonstop from Denver to Costa Rica, where the primary airport is San Jose International.
“We’ve talked about Costa Rica,” Hodas said. Flights there are still a possibility, he said, “but by no means is it an active discussion. There is nothing imminent. We’re going to absorb what we’ve already announced at this point.”
Frontier recently announced plans to start a number of new flights to Mexico, including Denver-to-Guadalajara, for which it received federal approval.
Frontier plans to start flights to Guadalajara in December, a foray into the Hispanic market beyond resort areas that primarily draw tourists.
Frontier does not fly to Mexico City, another large nonresort city which is served by Mexicana Airlines from Denver.
“Certainly there’s an opportunity there,” though not necessarily from Denver, Hodas said.
Denver International Airport spokesman Chuck Cannon said airport officials have discussed service to Central America.
