Who: Mac and Sharon Gordon of Superior
Where: On the deck of our over- water bungalow at the Sheraton Moorea.
Best meal: The canoe breakfast at the Sheraton Moorea was fabulous (delivered to us by canoe). It featured the delicious local specialty called Poisson Cru, which consists of raw tuna, lime juice, coconut milk, diced tomatoes, cucumber and a little onion (great for sushi lovers like ourselves, but anyone traveling to French Polynesia must try it).
Best deal: French Polynesia is pretty expensive. However, a rather economical introduction to the islands is the 10-day cruise aboard the Tahitian Princess that we went on prior to our stay at the Sheraton Moorea. When the cruise was over, we hopped the Moorea Express ferry from Tahiti to Moorea for only $9 per person. The ferry trip takes a half hour.
Best time to go: We have heard that the best time to visit French Polynesia is June or July. However, we went during the rainy season in early February and enjoyed the partly cloudy skies. It gave relief from the hot sun.
Best travel tip: If staying on Moorea, it’s a great idea to rent a car for a day to tour the island and go to the grocery store called Champion. All the food is either imported from France or from French Polynesia. You can stock up on fabulous pastries, breads, cheeses, candy and French wine. Then you won’t have to eat out as much, which saves a lot of money.
