A teenager playing soccer was killed by lightning Wednesday evening in Woodland Park, police said. He was the latest in a string of people who have been hit by lightning in Colorado.

The victim, whose name has not been released pending notification of kin, was playing at Cavanaugh Field when he was hit about 5:30 p.m.

The boy was taken to Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.

Colorado ranks third in the nation for lightning fatalities, after Florida and Texas. The last person killed in Colorado was a motorcyclist who was struck last month while on U.S. 36.

Seven people in Marble were injured by lightning this week when a bolt struck the tree they were hiding under.
