Denver was a cow town long before all those painted fiberglass bovines appeared around the city. But it wasn’t the first place to be invaded by these renegade ruminants. That honor belongs to Zurich, Switzerland, in 1998. These unique works of art are part of a movement called CowParade, and you can check out pictures online of cows currently in Athens, Greece; Edinburgh, Scotland; Lisbon, Spain; Boston; and Telemark, Norway. The various works are a lot of fun and often have a regional flavor. In Boston, one cow was painted to look like the scoreboard at Fenway Park at the end of the 2004 World Series. For more cows, go to flickr.com, the photo website, and do a search for “cowparade.” Moo.

“Boulder’s Favorite Place” Though Boulder’s scenic beauty is hardly a secret, many of its charms often go unnoticed by even those of us just down U.S. 36 in Denver. Russell and Gail Dohrmann’s book of photographs from the city nicknamed “the People’s Republic of Boulder,” which turns 150 in two years, remind us of the gem that lies at the foot of the Flatirons. The colorful photos capture Boulder’s highlights – the Pearl Street Mall, the University of Colorado campus and the jagged Flatiron mountains themselves. They also include some of the more hidden treasures – the amphitheater on Flagstaff Mountain, ice climbing in Boulder Canyon, some of the region’s best festivals, and nearby farms and ranches. And, yes, there are cows.
