Denver Post staff writer Ellen Sweets, who writes food features and the Search Me column for the Food section, was presented a lifetime achievement award Friday by the Colorado Association of Black Journalists at its annual media awards.
Accompanied by her daughter, Hannah Sweets, a chef in Aspen, Ellen told the audience that she loves writing about food because it brings people together.
“Ellen epitomizes the lifetime-achievement award. Look at her background: 40 years in the industry, her parents owned a newspaper,” says association president Amani Ali. “She’s in great company – Bertha Lynn, George Lane, Sylvia Cordy – these are all icons in the industry.”
The awards followed a dinner of gravy-smothered chicken and beef, potatoes au gratin, rice pilaf, macaroni and cheese, and green beans at the Donald Seawell Grand Ballroom in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.
The professional organization was formed in 1987 as a support network for black journalists and to provide African-Americans direct access to the mainstream media.|Kristen Browning-Blas
