Investigators on Wednesday were piecing together the circumstances that led to the drowning of a 22-month-old boy in Elbert County on Tuesday night.
The toddler was found unconscious in an inflatable swimming pool in the family’s backyard on Morgan Trail in an unincorporated area of the county near Elizabeth.
Authorities have not released the family’s name.
The child was airlifted to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, where he died at 8:26 p.m., authorities said.
Sheriff Bill Frangis said Wednesday that the family is cooperating with the investigation, but he declined to comment further other than to say, “We’re sifting through a lot of information.”
“I will not release anything or make any comments until all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed,” he said.
The district attorney’s office, the Elbert County coroner and the county social-services office are participating in the investigation.
District Attorney Carol Chambers’ office joined in the investigation as a matter of standard practice involving any suspicious death, said spokeswoman Kathleen Walsh. She declined to elaborate.
“This is an ongoing investigation, and the district attorney will not discuss any of the details at this time,” Walsh said.
