Bogota – A consignment of 1,352 kilos (2,977 pounds) of cocaine was discovered when a truck overturned on the Colombian Caribbean island of San Andres, police said Wednesday, describing the seizure as their biggest in recent months.
The truck had just left the island’s port after picking up cargo and the cocaine was exposed when the ceramic tiles in which smugglers had concealed the drug were cracked in the accident.
The governor of San Andres, Alvaro Archibold, told reporters the tiles were covered only with transparent plastic sheeting.
Authorities said the cocaine came in a shipment from the Colombian mainland port of Barranquilla and was bound ultimately for the United States and Europe.
