Downtown pedestrians will soon know exactly how long they have to get across the street.
The Denver Department of Public works announced a pilot program Monday to install countdown signals at crosswalks along Broadway between 16th and 20th Streets.
The signals will give the number of seconds available before the light switches to “Don’t Walk.”
“It’s basically just to provide additional information to the pedestrian,” city traffic engineer Brian Mitchell said.
As the pilot program expands, it will focus on intersections near schools, event venues, and high bus-transfer activity.
About 60 of the city’s 1,250 intersections are included in the pilot program. At an average cost of $5,000 per intersection, this pilot program will cost approximately $300,000 and is being funded through existing programs.
Mitchell said other metropolitan communities – such as Boulder and Littleton – have installed the signals with success.
