BRYCE, Utah-

This image shows a group of riders touring Bryce Canyon on horseback in the 1940s.

Bryce was designated a national park in 1929 to protect its unusual rock formations, which were created by eons of wind erosion, ice and rain. The limestone forms found around the canyon are beautiful and bizarre, with arches, hoodoos, spires and plateaus, and they attract 1.5 million visitors to this corner of Utah.

Horseback rides remain a popular way to see the park today, and even cityfolk who have no experience riding can do it. You can go down to the canyon floor and back in a couple of hours.

The park is also known for stargazing. There is very little light pollution in the area and it is considered one of the darkest spots in the Lower 48.
