It's festival season in Georgia, a time to celebrate everything from hog-calling to hummingbirds.
About 50 festivals are scheduled through December. For barbecue lovers, there's the Big Pig Jig near Vienna, Oct. 6-7, a two-day cook-off featuring more than 100 teams, preparing hundreds of entries, including Brunswick stew, barbecued hogs, barbecued chicken and barbecue sauce.
October's calendar also includes the Honeybee Festival in Hahira, Oct. 2-7; Sherman's Last Burning Barbecue Cook-off on Oct. 13 in Covington; the Doll Fair and Sale, Oct. 14, in Palmetto; Harvest Day Celebration at Sweet Auburn Curb Market, Oct. 21 in Atlanta; and the Hummingbird Festival, Oct. 21 in Hogansville.
Later this fall, on Nov. 3 in Savannah, check out Telfair Museum of Art's 12th Annual Art Fair as well as the Seafood Festival. Mule Day in Calvary is scheduled for Nov. 4, followed by the Chehaw Native American Culture Fest, Nov. 17 in Albany, and an Earth Fair Conservation Celebration back in Savannah on Nov. 18. The Swine Time Festival–with hog-calling and a best-dressed pig contest–is scheduled for Nov. 25 in Climax.
On Dec. 28, head to Jekyll Island for a New Year's Bluegrass Festival, and a Corn Dog Howl New Year's Eve Celebration Dec. 30 in Hiawassee.
