Police are heralding a Denver woman as a hero today after she reportedly caught a 9-month-old baby that had fallen from a third-floor balcony.
Police provided the following account of the the event: At about noon on Saturday, Mary Bussey and her son Brandon were returning to their apartment when they spotted a baby hanging by one hand over the concrete sidewalk nearly 20-feet below. Mary Bussey positioned herself below the baby and asked her son to go up the stairs and attempt to reach the child. The son had only made it one flight of stairs when the child fell into Mary Bussey’s waiting arms.
Police said the baby had been left home alone and had crawled out the front door. Officers determined that the child’s mother had left her the baby in the care of her 10- and 13-year-old brothers while she went to work. Apparently the two boys then left the apartment, leaving the front door open.
Paramedics examined the child at the scene and found it to be healthy and safe. The child was placed into the care custody and control of Denver Department of Social Services, while this investigation continued.
