If they want really to get a fright, they should check out the old place’s plumbing.

Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, lead investigators for “Ghost Hunters,” broadcast live from the oh-so-haunted Stanley Hotel in Estes Park on Tuesday (9 p.m. to 3 a.m., Sci Fi Channel).

This wildly popular show hinges on the idea that its hosts hear things go bump in the night, then scare themselves to death wondering if the sounds were real.

They’re going to the right place on Halloween. The Stanley, opened in 1909, has ghosts galore, including founder F.O. Stanley, seen walking in the kitchen, and his wife, Flora, who, it is said, has been heard playing the piano in the music room off the lobby.

I suggest Hawes and Wilson spend time in rooms 407 and 418, alleged to be especially ghost ridden. One-time landowner Lord Dunraven hangs out in 407 and children are often heard frolicking in 418.

My scariest experience at the Stanley was the inability to get the shower to quit dripping.

A new twist: It’s the first time “Ghost Hunters” has tried a live spook hunt. But six hours waiting for something or somebody to go “Boo”? I don’t think so.

Ghoulies

Peter Boyles makes his annual I-scare-myself trek for Hallo-

ween tonight.

He and his crew will hole up in the Peabody Mansion, 1141 Grant St., on the air at KHOW 630-AM, starting at 8 p.m.

The one-time home of Colorado Gov. James Peabody later housed a bar, Spirits, a place Boyles frequently, pardon me, “haunted.”

Hi-yo Silva

KCNC-Channel 4 helicopter pilot Mike Silva heading back to combat in Iraq at age 56 doesn’t concern retired Col. Bill Evans.

“Your article (Oct. 23) on Mike Silva seems to express concern about Mike’s age and how he will function in a combat environment.

“Anyone can get shot down, just as any cowboy can be thrown, but I don’t see Mike’s age as a problem but his experience as an advantage. Bless him for doing what he sees as the right thing to do.”
