Cheyenne – Sen. Craig Thom as, R-Wyo., came down with pneumonia and was not making more campaign appearances before today’s election.

Thomas, 73, was taken by ambulance to Wyoming Medical Center in Casper around 9 a.m. Sunday after he became lightheaded while attending First United Methodist Church in Casper, according to his press secretary, Cameron Hardy.

He was released about mid afternoon Sunday and flew with his wife, Susan, to their home in Washington, D.C., where he was resting Monday, Hardy said. Doctors in Casper prescribed antibiotics.

Hardy said Thomas was in contact with his staff Monday and sounded in “good spirits” but was tired and eager to see what he needed to do to get better.

Thomas was undergoing additional medical exams Monday at a military hospital in Bethesda, Md., Hardy said.

Gale Geringer, Thomas’ campaign spokeswoman, said Thom as had been scheduled to campaign door-to-door Monday.

Thomas is seeking a third six-year term. He is opposed by Democrat Dale Groutage of Lander.

Hardy said Thomas would likely stay in Washington during the election.

Thomas is Wyoming’s senior senator. He was elected to the Senate in 1994 and won re-election in 2000.

Before serving in the Senate, Thomas served in the U.S. House from 1989 to 1995.
