A man wanted on suspicion of killing an auto mechanic in Englewood has turned himself in to federal authorities at the Mexican border.
On Saturday morning, Justin Austin, 27, walked from the Mexican side of the border to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection entry point in Nogales, Ariz., and told officers there that he was a wanted man, agency spokesman Roger Maier said. Officers soon learned that the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office had issued a first-degree murder warrant for Austin.
Austin is wanted in the killing of Ron Nickerson, owner of 2 Brothers Automotive, who was shot in the face with a shotgun May 11, police said. Police said the shooter was upset about work Nickerson had done on his truck.
Maier said authorities don’t know how long Austin had been in Mexico or why he decided to turn himself in.
“Our experience is that, in many cases, they return to the U.S., especially if they have no support system or command of the language” in Mexico, Maier said.
